About Esszimmer – Everybody's Darling

Esszimmer hides at the back of Everybody's Darling, the day bar that chef Alexander Kumptner opened on Tuchlauben 22 in 2020, a few minutes' walk from Stephansdom in Vienna's 1st district. Pass through the curtain and the noise drops away: a handful of covers, a single set menu, and a kitchen run by a chef most Austrians first met on television. In 2021 Kumptner added this small fine-dining room, and in the 2025 MICHELIN Guide Austria — the guide's first edition — it earned him the first Michelin star of his career.

For the wider ladder of the city's starred tables, start with the Vienna dining guide and our ranking of Vienna's best restaurants to propose in 2026.

The Kitchen

Kumptner cooks Austrian memory through French classical technique, then leans in restrained Italian and Asian accents — the Michelin inspectors single out a "vongole, 'nduja, orzo, basil" plate as shorthand for the style. The menu turns with the season: recent ones open with Kaisergranat, langoustine over avocado, red grape and coriander, move through white Marchfeld asparagus with preserved lemon and tarragon, and build to a Kalbskrone, a crown of veal with young peas, guanciale and sweetbread, before a coconut, mango and kaffir-lime finish.

The multi-course menu is €145, with wine pairing at €90 and a vegetarian version on pre-order; there is no à la carte. Where Esszimmer sits among Vienna's French-rooted tables and fine-dining rooms is a fair debate; on intimacy and precision for the price, near the top.

The Room

The name means dining room, and the space earns it: tucked behind the bar, low-lit, with only a few tables, it feels closer to a private dinner than a restaurant. Service is warm rather than ceremonial, the pacing unhurried, and the small scale means the kitchen can pay attention to every plate. Dress is smart but not formal. The day bar out front handles aperitifs; the Esszimmer runs Wednesday to Saturday from the evening.

Best for a Proposal

Book Esszimmer to propose because the room does the work: a handful of covers behind a curtain, no passing traffic, and a long tasting menu that gives the evening its own rhythm. Reserve well ahead — there are only a few tables — and tell them the occasion. See the global list of rooms built for a proposal for how it compares.

Not for

Not for a large group or a quick dinner: the room seats only a handful, runs a single €145 set menu, and the bill climbs once the €90 wine pairing joins it. Bigger parties and à la carte flexibility belong elsewhere.
