Hujan Locale

Chef Will Meyrick's modern Indonesian room in central Ubud — the best-value serious dining in the village, with a menu that reads like an Archipelago-wide street-food tour.

The Verdict

Hujan Locale is Chef Will Meyrick's modern Indonesian restaurant in central Ubud — a short walk from the palace and Monkey Forest Road — and the destination most Ubud hotel concierges recommend when guests ask for serious Indonesian cooking without the tasting-menu commitment of Locavore or Apéritif. Meyrick, Australian-born and Bali-based since the early 2000s, has built a small restaurant group around the thesis that Indonesian street food, properly executed and respectfully presented, belongs in a fine-dining register.

The menu is organised as a tour of Archipelago regional cuisines. Diners typically order family-style: a West Sumatran rendang of locally raised short rib simmered for seven hours; a Balinese sate lilit of minced fish wrapped around lemongrass skewers; a Javanese gado-gado of local vegetables, a Yogyakarta-style jamur mushroom rice bowl, a West Sumatran dendeng of thinly dried spiced beef. Meyrick travels the Archipelago continually, and the menu rotates to reflect the regional traditions he is most recently immersed in.

The setting is one of Ubud's quietest triumphs — a two-level restaurant set back from Sri Wedari Road, with a bar on the ground floor and the main dining rooms upstairs in a converted heritage Balinese building. The sound design, the lighting, and the service together achieve a fine-dining feel at a decidedly fair price. The cocktail programme uses Indonesian spirits and local herbs, and the arak-based cocktails are a Meyrick signature.

The Sunday Times included Hujan Locale in its 2025 recommendations for Ubud, and the restaurant remains, for most travellers, the Ubud meal they most recommend to friends planning the trip — it is serious without being formal, and the cost per head remains a fraction of what the tasting-menu destinations require.

Why It Works for First Date

Hujan Locale is the Ubud first-date restaurant for diners who want the village's serious cooking without the tasting-menu duration. It is also the ideal team-dinner room for five to eight people — the family-style ordering creates the sharing dynamic that corporate dinners actually need, and the price point respects real budgets.
