About Harry's Piccolo

Harry's Piccolo is the gastronomic restaurant inside the Grand Hotel Duchi d'Aosta on Piazza Unità d'Italia — Trieste's grand square, the largest sea-facing piazza in Europe, and the city's most theatrical address. The room itself was once the trading floor of the Tergesteo stock exchange; the architecture remains unchanged. Stucco ceilings, marble columns, low-key brass lighting, and an open kitchen positioned like a stage at the head of the room.

Chefs Matteo Metullio and Davide De Pra have run the kitchen as a partnership since 2018, and the restaurant has held two Michelin stars since 2021. The signature dish is Harrysotto — a risotto of tomato water, plankton, basil cream and capers, finished tableside — and the rest of the menu is built with similar restraint and confidence. Three tasting menus run in parallel: a meat-led version, a fish-led version, and a signatures menu that walks through the kitchen's most decorated plates.

The wine programme is unusually serious for an Italian two-star — over 1,000 references with deep depth in Friuli and Slovenia, German Riesling, and Champagne. The sommelier team treats Friulano and Vitovska with the seriousness Burgundy gets in Paris, and the by-the-glass programme is the most interesting of any starred kitchen in the region. Service is quiet, multilingual, and pitched for the long international travel audience that Trieste increasingly attracts.

Harry's Piccolo is the city's destination dinner — the table that has put Trieste back on Italian fine-dining maps after a long quiet stretch. The room books out four weeks ahead in summer; lunch service is calmer and arguably the more elegant booking. The kitchen works at a level the city did not have ten years ago, and the room itself is the most beautiful dining room in Friuli.

Why It's Perfect for Impress Clients

Harry's Piccolo is the dinner you book when the trip needs to justify itself. The room is ceremonial enough for an important client; the kitchen is technically serious enough that nobody at the table will doubt the choice; and the wine list is deep enough to commemorate the evening with a bottle that will be remembered. For business travel through Slovenia, Croatia, or northeastern Italy, no other dining room makes a stronger case for an extra night in Trieste.
