Where the Mountain's History Lives

In the late 19th century, a Basque family named Gorrono ran sheep across the high meadows above what would eventually become Telluride ski resort. Their ranch sat at what is now Mountain Village, before the lifts, before the gondola, before the purpose-built alpine resort community that surrounds it today. The ranch buildings survived, and when Telluride Ski Resort developed the terrain around them, the decision was made to restore rather than replace. The result is a mid-mountain dining experience that carries authentic historical weight rather than manufactured rustic charm.

Gorrono Ranch sits beneath the Village Express Lift 4, accessible from the ski runs and directly from Mountain Village. In winter, the approach is made on skis or snowboard — an adventure in itself on days when the powder is deep enough to feel like trespassing on some better version of the day. The large outdoor deck, known as the Snow Beach, catches the afternoon sun and the view of the Wilson Mountain Range with an impartiality that makes no distinction between $15 chili and $200 gondola dinners. The mountain view at Gorrono is the same mountain view that costs eight times as much at Allred's above it, and this is one of the better arguments for having both options on the same mountain.

The menu is unapologetically casual. Burgers constructed from local beef, smoked brisket sandwiches that have developed a following among the morning chair-line crowd who spend their afternoons thinking about lunch, house chili loaded with toppings, BBQ plates that make the most of the smoker that produces them — this is mountain food designed to fuel the afternoon session rather than to perform culinary sophistication. The kitchen is honest about what it is, and this honesty is its primary virtue.

The Snow Beach Experience

Gorrono's legendary Snow Beach — the name refers to the large south-facing outdoor deck that collects skiers in the way that a beach collects sunbathers — is one of the signature experiences of a Telluride ski day. On clear afternoons, the combination of strong Colorado sun, reflected snow light, cold beer from the Outpost Bar, live music that arrives unannounced on good days, and the Wilson Range backdrop creates an atmosphere that skiers return to year after year as one of the defining pleasures of a Telluride trip. The Snow Beach is not about the food. It is about the accumulated sensory experience of a perfect mountain afternoon.

Inside the main lodge, two large dining rooms with stone fireplaces and the warm weight of historic timber construction provide the interior dining experience. The Gorrono Saloon and Outpost Bar serve Telluride's most atmospheric on-mountain drinks. In summer, the ranch transforms for events — weddings, corporate retreats, festivals — and the outdoor space becomes one of Colorado's most dramatic natural venues.

Winter hours: 11am to 4pm daily. Phone: (970) 728-7440. The ranch is operated by Telluride Ski & Golf Resort and is included in the mountain's dining portfolio. No reservations accepted for lunch service; arrive early on high-traffic days.

Signature Items

The smoked brisket is the most consistently praised item, with reviewers noting the smoke ring and the tenderness that comes from a properly managed smoker rather than shortcuts. The green chili is a Colorado staple done with the kind of heat that locals approve of and visitors frequently underestimate. The burgers are constructed with proportions that acknowledge that skiers need actual fuel. And the local craft beer selection — rotating Colorado taps that change with the season — is the proper context for all of it.

Why Gorrono Ranch is Perfect for a Team Dinner

Corporate ski trips have a problem that Gorrono Ranch solves: not everyone on the team wants to dress for dinner at the end of a day on the mountain. Gorrono's lunch operation functions as an informal team gathering point that requires nothing of the participants except an appetite and a willingness to sit in the sun. The Snow Beach in winter, the large lodge dining rooms in all weather, and the accessible price point all contribute to a team lunch experience that removes the formality pressure of an official dinner while delivering the bonding value of shared food, shared space, and the kind of conversation that happens when people are still glowing from the m
