The Verdict
Oretachi No Nikuya — 'Our Beef Restaurant' — is the Michelin one-starred wagyu yakiniku destination that has quietly become Taiwan's most respected steakhouse. Its defining practice is the whole-animal programme: each month, the restaurant purchases an entire Japanese Black Wagyu cow, raised by a specific farm in Miyazaki or Kagoshima, and butchers it in-house. Every cut — from the prized chateaubriand and sirloin down to the chuck flat, the outside skirt, and the rare cuts that conventional steakhouses cannot sell — appears somewhere on the menu during the weeks that the carcass is on service.
The counter seats eighteen. The grill is traditional Japanese yakiniku — binchotan charcoal, individual small grates — but the discipline is closer to omakase sushi than conventional Japanese barbecue. Diners do not grill their own meat. The chef and his team handle every piece, timing each cut to the second, and the meal proceeds as a guided sequence of twelve to fifteen cuts over two and a half hours. The sequence is deliberate: leaner, structured cuts first, the rich marbled sections in the middle, and an unorthodox return to lighter preparations as the meal closes.
The sake and shochu programme is unusual among Taichung's Michelin restaurants — the list is dominated by smaller Kyushu producers and by sake types (koshu, kijoshu) that the kitchen pairs specifically to grilled wagyu. The wine list is smaller but well chosen, with a section of aged Bordeaux and Rhône Syrah that the regular clientele has learned to expect.
The restaurant earned its Michelin star in 2022 and has retained it through 2025. Reservations open two months ahead and the weekend slots for the chateaubriand cow — the rare months when the restaurant buys a Kobe-prefecture animal — move inside fifteen minutes of release.
Why It Works for Birthday
Oretachi No Nikuya is the Taichung restaurant most suited to the business dinner where you want your counterpart to leave impressed without the meal being about you. Beef is universal. The whole-animal programme is a conversation starter that unfolds organically through the meal. The counter format keeps the group dynamic — six or eight people around the grill is the ideal — and the Michelin pedigree answers any question about whether you took the meeting seriously.
