Dave Hausmann and John Peterson were ski bums when they opened Lefty's in June 1993 — the kind of ski bums who had spent enough time in enough mountain bars to know exactly what was missing from Ketchum's downtown. What was missing was a place with a genuinely good burger, a proper selection of draft beer, free pool tables, and a sunny outdoor deck where a person could sit for three hours without being made to feel like they were occupying a table someone else needed. Lefty's has been that place since the first season and intends to remain it.
The evidence of that intention is in the ownership structure. In October 2022, when the possibility of Lefty's changing hands became a real concern, more than fifty local investors pooled their capital to buy the business and the real estate outright. Not to change it. To preserve it. This is the kind of community protection that resort towns occasionally attempt and usually fail to execute because the money on the other side of the table is simply larger. In Ketchum, the money and the community were apparently the same thing. Lefty's survived intact.
The burger is the anchor. Half-pound beef patties, properly seasoned, served with the option to upgrade to an elk burger that functions as an argument for local sourcing that needs no other supporting evidence. The bleu cheese burger is the sophisticated order. The secret sauce on the standard version is the reason regulars never fully commit to the bleu cheese variant. Both positions are defensible.
The Monkey Fries deserve the reputation they have built over thirty years: ridged potato discs fried to a shattering crispness, dusted with a proprietary spice blend, served with a homemade fry sauce that people have been trying to reverse-engineer since 1993 without notable success. They are voted Best Fries in the Valley with the same frequency and consistency that Lefty's wins Best Deck and Best Place to Watch the Game — which is to say, regularly and without serious competition.
The beer selection runs to 13 drafts and nearly 30 bottles and cans. Six HD televisions cover every major broadcast sport with satellite feeds. The outdoor deck, when the sun is in the right position over the mountains — which in Ketchum is more often than it has any right to be — is one of the finest lunch venues in Idaho.
Lefty's works as a team dinner for the same reason it has worked since 1993: it creates an environment where people actually talk to each other. The pool tables, the sports on television, the outdoor deck, the beer selection — these are conversation starters rather than conversation obstacles. Nobody performs at Lefty's. Teams that have gone to formal dinners and come away with the same dynamics they arrived with routinely have better results at Lefty's. For solo dining, the bar seating, the sports coverage, and the complete absence of social pressure make it the correct choice for any evening when you want company without conversation.
