Dar Zarrouk — Tunisian / Mediterranean, Sidi Bou Said

Dar Zarrouk occupies a restored Tunisian palace at the village's highest point — a position from which the entire sweep of the Gulf of Tunis is visible, including the ruins of ancient Carthage on the promontory below. Dining here is eating within one of the Mediterranean's most historically significant landscapes.

The kitchen produces formal Tunisian cuisine — the Tunis bourgeois tradition that differs significantly from the popular image of Tunisian food. Brick à l'oeuf (crispy pastry with egg and tuna), merguez at the highest level, and the couscous aux fruits de mer that represents the coastal Tunisian tradition at its most accomplished.

The setting inside the palace — carved plasterwork, zellige tiles, and the colonnaded courtyard garden — provides an interior as extraordinary as the exterior view. Dar Zarrouk offers both simultaneously.

The wine list draws from Tunisia's own wine-producing regions — Mornag, Grombalia, and the Côtes de Carthage appellations — with genuine knowledge of the producers and the specific character of Tunisian viticulture.
