The Restaurant

Onyva — French for "let's go" — was newly added to the 2026 MICHELIN Guide Seoul & Busan, a recognition that this Hapjeong address has arrived at the level the guide considers worth recommending. The chef-owner spent years in Paris and Lyon before returning to Seoul to open a French kitchen for a Korean dining public that increasingly understands what serious French cooking requires.

The menu is a seven-course tasting that runs through the classical French canon with intelligent restraint. Quenelles de brochet with a lobster bisque reduction that has been reduced for six hours. Duck confit with a cherry gastrique and Périgourdine sauce. A cheese trolley that carries five French selections alongside one Korean cheese. The soufflé arrives twenty-five minutes after the order is taken and not a minute sooner — the kitchen refuses to rush it.

The room is on the ground floor of a three-storey building that Onyva occupies entirely, with a wine cellar below and a private dining room on the upper floor. The main dining area seats twenty-four, with banquette seating along one wall and round tables arranged for intimacy rather than capacity. The wine list is predominantly Burgundy, Bordeaux, and Rhône, with several Loire cuvées that pair unexpectedly well with the lighter fish courses.

Hapjeong's transformation into one of Seoul's most design-conscious neighbourhoods makes Onyva representative of a city that has decided it no longer needs to travel to eat well. A classic French tasting menu prepared with this level of discipline, available twelve minutes from the Hongik University metro station, is exactly the kind of restaurant Seoul has been waiting for.

Best Occasion Fit

Proposal: The private dining room on the upper floor is designed for precisely this. The kitchen can prepare a personalised dessert course with advance notice. Request the corner table for the main dining room if the private room is unavailable.

First Date: French cuisine is the universal language of romantic intent. The progression through seven courses at Onyva gives a first evening structure and something to talk about — each course is a considered choice, not a random delivery.

Impress Clients: For visitors from Europe or North America who understand the French fine dining register, Onyva delivers it without apology and without a plane ticket. The Seoul credential — that this kitchen is competing at this level — is itself impressive.

What Guests Say

Helena Reinhardt Proposal

The soufflé alone justified the evening. Onyva has done something difficult in Seoul — it has opened a French restaurant that does not try to be Korean-influenced, and the honesty of that commitment is its greatest strength.
