Casa Museu de Chocolate — Café / Chocolate, São Tomé City

Casa Museu de Chocolate combines a small museum about São Tomé's cacao industry with a café that uses the island's own chocolate in every preparation. The result is both educational and genuinely delicious — a rare combination that the island's extraordinary cacao quality makes possible.

The chocolate programme is the reason to visit. São Tomé Forastero beans produce dark chocolate of 70% and above with flavour notes that specialist chocolatiers from Paris and Brussels source specifically: red fruit, tobacco, and a brightness that the volcanic soil and altitude create. The tasting flight — four single-origin bars from different São Tomé farms — is the essential order.

The hot chocolate here, made from freshly ground São Tomé beans, is the finest cup available in the city and one of the finest in any café anywhere. It is a different drink from Swiss or Belgian hot chocolate — darker, more complex, less sweet.

The cacao farm tours organised from the café — visiting the farms in the hills above the city where the pods grow and are processed — provide the context that makes the drinking chocolate taste like what it is: the product of a specific place, a specific soil, and a specific tradition.
