The Room

Rufino's sits on Rua Sansão Alves dos Santos in Vila Nova Conceição, in a converted neighbourhood house with a small front garden, a wood-fired grill at the back, and seventy seats across the main dining room and a covered terrace. The premise is Italian-Brazilian — handmade pasta from the Italian half of the kitchen, a serious wood-fired grill from the Brazilian half, and a wine list that takes the table where it wants to go.

The interior is studied neighbourhood-Italian. Cream walls, exposed brick, framed black-and-white photographs of São Paulo, candle lamps on every table, and the obligatory wood-fired grill visible from the dining room. The covered terrace at the front holds another fifteen seats and is the seat to request on a clear evening. The back room, slightly quieter, holds parties of six to twelve.

Rufino's draws a Vila Nova Conceição neighbourhood crowd — local residents who book once a week, the Itaim/Vila Nova business set who book the weekday lunch, and the occasional weekend couple from Pinheiros who recognise the kitchen. The booking window holds at one week. The Saturday lunch service is one of the most generous Italian-Brazilian Saturday lunches in the area.

The Food

The kitchen runs Italian classical with a Brazilian wood-fired grill programme behind it. The signature ravioli al ragù — handmade pasta filled with three slow-cooked meats — is the order to make on a first visit. The picanha na chapa, the spaghetti alle vongole, the lasagna alla bolognese, and the Friday-only osso buco are the four other dishes that account for most of the kitchen's output.

Antipasti lean Italian-classical — a serious carpaccio, a competent burrata, the obligatory bruschetta misti. Secondi include a respectable rack of lamb, a competent steak Diane, and the Saturday-only roasted goat from the wood oven that requires booking ahead. Sides are split between Italian (sautéed greens, polenta) and Brazilian (couve, farofa, mandioca frita).

Wine list is Italian and Brazilian-led with a serious Tuscan and Brazilian-natural-wine bench, and a usable French upper register. Bottles from R$140 are honest. House red carafe at R$50 is generous. Service is neighbourhood-warm — captains who remember regulars by drink, and a kitchen that sends the obligatory amuse and a small dessert without being asked.

Best Occasion Fit

First Date: The covered terrace at Rufino's on a clear evening is one of the most distinctly Vila Nova Conceição first-date settings — neighbourhood-warm, Italian without being a cliché, and the bill is plausible at R$190 a head. The corner two-top on the terrace is the seat to request.

Birthday: Rufino's handles birthdays the way an Italian-Brazilian neighbourhood should — a candle on the dessert, a small cachaça from the bar, a signed menu the table will keep. The round table at the back holds parties of six to ten.

Team Dinner: The back room at Rufino's holds parties of ten to twenty without losing the neighbourhood warmth. The set menu at R$165 walks the team through antipasti, a pasta course, a secondo and dessert. The room handles team dinners with the warmth Vila Nova Conceição regulars expect.
