"A restored 19th-century captain's mansion above the Oia caldera — book the sunset terrace for a Santorini anniversary."
About 1800-Floga
Architect Ioannis Zaggelidis began restoring an abandoned sea captain's mansion in Oia in 1986, naming it Restaurant 1800 for the era of the house and Floga in tribute to its ancestors. The terrace is cut into the cliff at the quieter end of the village, a few minutes' walk from where the crowds gather for the sunset, and the kitchen sends out modern Greek cooking honoured with the Greek Golden Chef's Hat Award in 2005 and 2007.
The Kitchen
1800-Floga is a restored-mansion institution rather than a celebrity-chef room: owner Ioannis Zaggelidis, who holds a sommelier distinction, has shaped its menu and cellar for decades. The cooking is traditional Greek with a Mediterranean, modern touch, leaning on Santorini's own produce — the island's tomatoes, capers and white aubergine — alongside top ingredients from further afield.
The signature is a fish-roe pie, the chef's taramas folded into a velvet cream of cheese and soured milk and served with a shot of Santorinian tsikoudia, a dish regulars come back for. Sfougato, a baked omelette of courgette, onion and cheese, and lemon-butter shrimp round out the Aegean repertoire. Expect roughly €45–90 per person before wine, more once the caldera-view tables and a serious bottle come into it. The kitchen's awards — the Golden Chef's Hat in 2005 and 2007 and a Gourmet magazine award in 2007–2008 — reflect a long, consistent run. The Room
The draw is the position: a stone terrace built into the caldera wall, with whitewashed arches, candle-bright lighting after dark and an open view west over the volcano and the sea. The prime two-tops sit on the edge for the sunset and are the hardest to land. Inside, the restored captain's mansion keeps its vaulted ceilings and period detail. The mood is calm and romantic rather than buzzy, service is attentive, and dress runs smart-casual.
Best for an Anniversary
Book this terrace for an anniversary because few tables in Greece are better placed: a caldera-edge two-top, a sunset over the volcano and a restored mansion with decades of history behind it. The quieter end of Oia keeps the crowds at arm's length, the cooking has a real sense of island place, and the setting does the romance for you. Reserve a sunset table well ahead. Compare it on our best restaurants for an anniversary and across Santorini's dining guide.
Not for
Not for budget travellers or big groups — portions are refined and small, prices run high, and the prime caldera tables seat only two.
Frequently Asked
Is 1800-Floga worth it?
For the setting and the occasion, yes. The caldera-edge terrace in a restored captain's mansion is among the best-placed dinner tables in Oia, and the modern Greek kitchen has the Golden Chef's Hat Award (2005 and 2007) behind it. At roughly €45–90 a head it is a splurge, and some find portions small, so come for the view and the romance as much as the plate.
How hard is it to book 1800-Floga?
The sunset-edge tables are the hard part. In high season the prime two-tops on the caldera lip book days to weeks ahead, so reserve early and ask specifically for a terrace table at sunset. The restaurant is on Nikolaou Nomikou Street at the quieter end of Oia, and earlier or later seatings away from the sunset rush are easier to land.
What is the dress code at 1800-Floga?
Smart-casual. This is Oia, so resort-smart works: a dress or a collared shirt reads as right, and the candle-lit terrace invites dressing for the evening. There is no jacket requirement, but the romance of the setting and the price point mean most guests make a small effort rather than arriving straight from the beach.
What is the average meal price at 1800-Floga?
Plan for roughly €45–90 per person before wine, and more for a full dinner with a good bottle and a caldera-view table — some couples spend well over €100 each. The menu is modern Greek à la carte built around Santorini produce, so the final bill depends on how many courses and which wines you choose.
Is 1800-Floga good for an anniversary?
Yes — it is built for one. A caldera-edge terrace, a sunset over the volcano and a quiet end of Oia make it one of the island's most romantic tables. Reserve a sunset two-top well ahead. See our best restaurants for a romantic table for more occasion-first picks.
