About Le Papillon

In 1977, Mike Mashayekh opened Le Papillon in a remodeled coffee shop at 410 Saratoga Avenue in West San Jose. Almost half a century later, the kitchen has not stopped. That kind of longevity at the highest level of French cuisine is not accidental — it is the product of a family that genuinely believes in what it does, in a city that has come to depend on it for the most important occasions in life.

Le Papillon specializes in contemporary French cuisine built on sustainable, organic ingredients that change with the California seasons. The kitchen does not offer à la carte. Prix fixe menus — three courses, four courses, or a full tasting menu — give the kitchen the ability to cook with intention and the guest the pleasure of surrendering to that intention. The Dungeness crab soufflé with lemon, saffron, and caviar has become a signature that guests return for specifically. The roasted duck breast is executed with the kind of quiet confidence that only comes from decades of practice.

The dining room is everything a romantic special-occasion restaurant should be: elegantly upholstered chairs, white tablecloths, candlelight, and a warmth that the French have been mastering since Escoffier. The service is formal without being cold, deeply professional without being theatrical. Waiters here know the wine list, know the menu, and know how to read a table. It is exactly the environment where you want to propose, celebrate a birthday of significance, or simply mark the fact that something important has happened in your life.

Why Le Papillon is Perfect for a Proposal

Forty-seven years of hosting San Jose's most important dinners have given Le Papillon an atmosphere that knows exactly what it is for. The candlelit room, the impeccable service, the prix fixe format that removes every logistical decision and leaves you free to focus entirely on the moment — all of it conspires to create the conditions where a proposal feels inevitable and right. The kitchen can accommodate any dietary requirement with advance notice, and the sommelier's French wine list provides the right bottle for any answer. This is the room where San Jose has been getting engaged since 1977.
