About Le Tertre
Le Tertre occupies one of the most photographed corners of Saint-Émilion — a south-facing courtyard at the foot of the Tertre de la Tente, the cobbled ramp that climbs from the basse-ville to the Place du Clocher. The vine-covered pergola in the courtyard, the stone walls, the limestone-paved floor — all of it gives the lunch service the most photogenic table in the village on any clear day between May and October.
Chef Jérôme Schilling cooks confident modern South-West French. Veal carpaccio with truffle and Parmigiano; Aquitaine duck breast with Agen prunes and Armagnac; sea bass roasted whole with fennel and lemon; a Soufflé au Sauternes the kitchen has refined for a decade. The kitchen runs both an à la carte and a four-course bistro tasting — the tasting is the right move at lunch.
The wine programme — about 350 references — leans heavily into the right-bank classed growths with a strong Pomerol section, a serious Saint-Émilion grand cru bench, and a modest Languedoc and Provence row for warm-weather lunches. The by-the-glass list rotates fifteen bottles, mostly local, and the sommelier is more than willing to pour off-list at fair mark-ups for special-occasion lunches.
Service is led by the proprietor's family and runs at a warm regional register. The room (interior, in winter) is candle-lit and intimate; the courtyard (May–October) is the more atmospheric option and the entire reason most guests choose the restaurant. It is the village's prettiest summer table.
Why It's Perfect for Birthday
Le Tertre is the birthday lunch the village was built for. The vine-covered courtyard, the four-course tasting, the bottle of Pomerol or Saint-Émilion grand cru poured at fair markup, the sun on the limestone walls — every element of a Saint-Émilion summer afternoon is present. For a milestone-birthday lunch in Aquitaine, no other terrace in the village handles the brief more completely.
