About Origine

Origine opened in 2019 on Rue aux Ours — a central Rouen address — and has quickly established itself as the current-generation counterpoint to Gill and La Couronne. Chef Benoit Witz trained at Alain Ducasse's Louis XV in Monaco and his cooking reflects that lineage: technically exact, minimalist on the plate, and driven by Normandy's farm and sea supply.

The format is modern-European tasting menu (four, six, or eight courses) with an a la carte option that most locals prefer for weekday dinners. Signatures include a cured trout with apple and cider vinegar, Normandy lamb cooked over embers, and a pre-dessert of fresh goat curd with Calvados-soaked raisins that is the room's best representation of the chef's voice.

The dining room is 30 covers and contemporary-minimalist — light wood, exposed brick on one wall, soft indirect lighting. The aesthetic is deliberately non-traditional (a break from Rouen's dominant old-France dining aesthetic) and works in the restaurant's favour for date and client dinners where a more contemporary register matches the diner's expectations.

The wine list is shorter than Gill's but sharper — an all-French selection heavy on biodynamic and natural Loire, Jura, and Normandy cider producers. The sommelier is among Rouen's youngest and most engaged; pairing conversations are part of the evening rather than a transaction.

First dates at Origine benefit from the contemporary-minimalist register that suits diners who would find La Couronne's historical weight too formal and Gill's double-starred formality too imposing.
