About Muusu
Muusu (Latvian for 'Ours') operates out of a narrow Old Town building on Skunu iela and offers Riga's most intimate fine-dining experience. The room seats 32 and includes a chef's counter that seats eight — the best seats in the house and among the best solo-dining positions in the city.
The kitchen is contemporary-Latvian in the Nordic-influenced style: fermented rye with smoked butter, Baltic herring cured three ways, cold-smoked trout with pickled gooseberry, elk loin with juniper and lingonberry. Presentations are minimalist and the cooking rewards attention — the kind of food that a solo diner or a first date both engage with naturally.
Service is performed by a small team that runs the floor and the counter simultaneously. The chef speaks to counter diners between courses; floor service is friendly and precise. The wine programme is shorter than 3 Pavaru's but well-chosen and includes Latvian fruit wines and a small Georgian section that's worth exploring.
For first dates, the chef's counter is the unusual move — it removes the face-to-face pressure of a two-top table and replaces it with the shared spectator experience of watching the kitchen work. The conversation naturally flows to the dishes and the technique; awkward silences dissolve into the theatre.
Best Occasion Fit
First dates at the Muusu chef's counter benefit from the format's natural conversation scaffolding — eight courses arriving, each requiring comment, each plated in front of both diners. For solo diners, the same counter is among Riga's best perches: the food is serious, the staff engage, and the evening has structure without requiring a dining companion.
