About The Bunker
The Bunker is the Anderson-family-run fine-dining institution on Cow Lane — a hidden CBD back-street one block from Beach Street, in a converted heritage stone building — and is Queenstown's longest-running fine-dining room (continuously operated since 1996). The dining room is intentionally hidden — there is no street signage; visitors find the restaurant by following Cow Lane to the small wooden door at the back of a courtyard.
The cuisine is contemporary New Zealand with deep regional sourcing. Signatures include a slow-cooked Otago venison with juniper jus; a hand-rolled Central Otago black-truffle tagliolino; a wood-fired Stewart Island salmon; a Central Otago Pinot-Noir-poached lamb shoulder; the famous 'pavlova Bunker' for the dessert course.
The wine list runs to 400 references with deep Central Otago Pinot Noir coverage. The cocktail bar at the front of the restaurant — open late — is one of the village's best after-dinner drinks programmes.
Service is family-run — the Anderson siblings rotate the floor and the captains have worked the property for decades. The Bunker is the dining room that visiting institutional New Zealand and Australian clients use as a default address.
Why It's Perfect for Birthday
The Bunker is the birthday-night room in Queenstown when the dinner needs to feel like an institutional occasion. Twenty-eight years of unbroken family ownership settles the credibility question; the hidden CBD setting is the conversation. Book the corner four-top.
