About Pizzeria Popolare

The queue forms on the pavement of rue Réaumur before the doors open, and it does not take names. Big Mamma's Pizzeria Popolare has run on the same terms since March 2017: no reservations, wood-fired Neapolitan pizza, fresh pasta made in-house, and a bill that rarely clears €25 a head. The black-truffle tagliatelle is the dish people line up for, finished with shaved truffle and cream at around €19. The bar behind it pours from roughly 500 bottles. It is loud, fast, and Italian to the studs.

The Kitchen

Pizzeria Popolare belongs to Big Mamma, the group Tigrane Seydoux and Victor Lugger built around imported Italian produce and young Italian cooks. There is no celebrity chef on the pass; the model is a brigade of Naples-trained pizzaioli working a wood-fired oven, with a pasta station turning out fresh tagliatelle and gnocchi to order. The black-truffle tagliatelle, finished tableside, is the order the room is known for, at roughly €19. The carbonara arancini and the burrata starters hold up, and the Margherita and truffle-cream pizzas run €12 to €19.

Portions are generous, ingredients are trucked in weekly from Italy, and the kitchen runs at volume without dropping the standard that made the group's name. Expect €12 to €25 a head before cocktails, which is the real draw: serious Italian cooking at trattoria prices at 111 rue Réaumur in the 2nd arrondissement. The bar, stocked with around 500 spirits and run by Alberto Sinibaldi, is the largest of any Big Mamma room in Paris.

The Room

The room is a converted Belle Époque hall: high ceilings, painted frescoes, marble-topped tables packed tight, and that vast central bar. Sound is loud and stays loud, especially after eight, so this is a table for energy rather than a quiet word. Lighting is warm and low. Tables sit close, the dress code is whatever you walked in wearing, and it seats well over a hundred across two levels. No reservations means a wait at peak; arrive at opening or after nine to cut it.

Best for a Birthday

Book a group in for a birthday because Pizzeria Popolare gets the basics right: the room is loud enough that a table of ten singing over a tiramisu vanishes into the noise, the bill stays low enough to cover a crowd, and the kitchen sends sharing plates of pizza and pasta fast. Come early, claim a long table on the lower level, and work through the truffle tagliatelle, a few Margheritas and a round from the 500-bottle bar. Not for

Not for a quiet first date: no reservations, the wait runs long at peak, and the room is too loud for a soft voice across the table.

Frequently Asked

Is Pizzeria Popolare worth it?

Yes, for the price. It is one of the best value Italian tables in central Paris: wood-fired Neapolitan pizza, fresh pasta, and the black-truffle tagliatelle for around €19, with most meals landing under €25 a head before drinks. The trade-off is the queue and the noise, since the room takes no reservations. Come for a lively, low-cost dinner, not a hushed one. See more in our best pizza worldwide guide.

How hard is it to book Pizzeria Popolare?

You cannot book it. Big Mamma runs Pizzeria Popolare on a walk-in basis only, so there is no reservation list and no calling ahead. The queue forms before the 6pm dinner opening and again around 8pm; the way to beat it is to arrive at opening or after 9pm. Lunch from 11:45am is the quietest window. Put your name down and wait at the bar.

What is the dress code at Pizzeria Popolare?

There is no dress code. The room is casual and busy, and you will see everything from jeans and trainers to office wear straight off rue Réaumur. Come comfortable. It is a trattoria built for volume and energy rather than formality, so nobody will look twice at what you are wearing, and there is no jacket or smart-casual expectation at any service.

What is the average meal price at Pizzeria Popolare?

Expect €12 to €25 a head before drinks. Pizzas run €12 to €19, pastas €13.50 to €20, mains to around €21, and desserts €7.50 to €12. The black-truffle tagliatelle, the dish to order, is about €19. Cocktails from the 500-bottle bar add up quickly, so the bill climbs if you drink; the food itself stays cheap for central Paris.

Is Pizzeria Popolare good for a birthday?

Yes, book it for a loud group birthday. The room is noisy enough to absorb a table singing, the sharing plates feed a crowd cheaply, and the kitchen turns dishes around fast. Arrive early, since there are no reservations and large groups wait longest at peak. For a quieter celebration, compare options in our best restaurants for a birthday.
