About Lapérouse

The mirrors in the upstairs salons are scratched with diamond, scored by nineteenth-century courtesans testing whether the gems their suitors gave them were real. Lapérouse has stood at 51 Quai des Grands Augustins since 1766, the first restaurant ever to hold three Michelin stars, in 1933, and the most discreet address in Saint-Germain. Since its restoration it has cooked under Jean-Pierre Vigato, with Christophe Michalak on pastry. The menu is deliberately old-fashioned: Noirmoutier potato charlotte with Lapérouse caviar, sole meuniere at €95 to share, roasted blue lobster. Expect €120 to €200 a head. You come here for the rooms as much as the plates. For a classic Left Bank bistro nearby, Allard is a short walk.

The Kitchen

Jean-Pierre Vigato, who held two Michelin stars for years at his own Apicius, now cooks at Lapérouse to a brief written by the building itself: classic, generous, unapologetically rich. His menu reads like a museum of French haute cuisine done properly. The Noirmoutier potato charlotte layered with Lapérouse caviar is the signature, a study in restraint and money. Sole meuniere comes whole for two at around €95, the blue lobster is roasted and served in its shell with coral butter, and the tender pigeon arrives with fresh peas and a sauce diable.

Christophe Michalak, one of France's best-known pastry chefs, closes the meal with desserts that play the same nostalgic register. A la carte mains for one run from €36 for a blanquette de veau to the high double digits; budget €120 to €200 a head with wine. The cellar is classical and deep, poured by sommeliers who treat a long dinner as the norm. Lapérouse is not chasing a fourth star or a 50 Best ranking. It is doing something rarer: cooking the food the room has always demanded, at the address where Parisian dining theatre was effectively invented. It sits comfortably among the great classic French restaurants worldwide.

The Room

There are two Lapérouses. Downstairs is a warren of gilded, candle-bright rooms along the Seine, all red velvet, painted ceilings and worn mirrors. Upstairs are the salons particuliers, private rooms that lock from the inside, the most famous of their kind in Paris and the reason for the diamond-scratched glass. Lighting is low to the point of conspiratorial, sound hushed, tables set far apart or sealed away entirely. Dress is smart; jackets suit the room though they are not strictly enforced. The main dining rooms seat a few dozen; the salons take parties of two to a dozen. Service is old-school formal, attentive and unhurried. Few rooms in Europe are this theatrical without tipping into kitsch.

Best for a Proposal

Book a private salon at Lapérouse to propose because no room in Paris is built more squarely for romance. The salons particuliers lock from the inside, so the moment is yours alone, with no waiter hovering and no neighbouring table watching. The candle-bright gilding and the Seine through the window do the staging for you. And the history helps: this is where lovers have hidden for two and a half centuries, the diamond-scratched mirrors proof of every gift tested in these rooms. Reserve the salon in advance, order the caviar charlotte and the blue lobster, and have the ring ready before Michalak's dessert. For more romantic tables, see the Paris dining guide.

Not for

Not for diners chasing modern, cutting-edge cooking or a bargain; Lapérouse sells nostalgia, candlelight and rich classics at serious prices, and the room is the main event.

Frequently Asked

Is Lapérouse worth it?

Yes, if you understand what you are paying for. Lapérouse is the most atmospheric historic restaurant in Paris, and the private salons are unique in the city. The cooking under Jean-Pierre Vigato is classical and accomplished rather than groundbreaking, and prices run €120 to €200 a head. Come for the rooms, the romance and the history, and the food will more than hold up. Come expecting avant-garde gastronomy and you have misread the place.

How hard is it to book Lapérouse?

Booking a table is straightforward a week or two out, but the private salons particuliers need more notice and a deposit, especially for weekends and special occasions. Reserve directly through the restaurant and specify if you want a salon. Lapérouse is closed Sundays and serves dinner only on Saturdays and Mondays. For a proposal, book the salon as far ahead as you can.

What should I order at Lapérouse?

Order the Noirmoutier potato charlotte with Lapérouse caviar, the signature dish, and the roasted blue lobster. Couples often share the whole sole meuniere at around €95. Save room for Christophe Michalak's desserts, which are a draw in their own right. The wine list is deep in classic Bordeaux and Burgundy; let the sommelier choose a mature bottle to match the room.

Is Lapérouse good for a date?

Lapérouse is one of the most romantic restaurants in Paris, so yes, emphatically. The candle-lit downstairs rooms suit a first or second date, while the lockable private salons upstairs are made for anniversaries and proposals. The low light, the Seine view and the hushed service all push the evening toward intimacy. Book a salon if you want true privacy for the night.
