Bye Bye Blues

1 Michelin Star Modern Sicilian $$$$ Mondello, Palermo

Patrizia Di Benedetto — Sicily's first female Michelin-starred chef — cooks on the Mondello shoreline. The Belle Époque coastline, a star, and four decades of mastery.

The Restaurant

Patrizia Di Benedetto and her husband Tommaso opened Bye Bye Blues in 1991 in Mondello — the Belle Époque seaside suburb that Palermo's aristocracy made its summer retreat in the early 20th century. In 2010 Di Benedetto became the first female chef in Sicily to hold a Michelin star; the restaurant has retained the award every year since. The dining room is warm and low-key — the atmosphere of a neighbourhood restaurant with the cooking of a destination kitchen — and sits a hundred metres from the Mondello beach on a residential street lined with the same liberty-style villas Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa knew.

The cooking is modern Sicilian with a particular affinity for the island's seafood: raw gamberi rossi from Mazara del Vallo, pasta with sea urchin from the Egadi islands, bluefin tuna from Trapani, swordfish prepared in ways the old Palermitan market tradition would not fully recognise but entirely approves of. The tasting menus run four to seven courses (€100 to €170), with abbreviated lunch options and a serious Sicilian wine list with particular depth in the whites of Etna and the amber-toned late-harvest wines of Pantelleria.

Di Benedetto's reputation has been built on four decades of consistency rather than self-promotion. The restaurant has hosted Italian heads of state, international chefs on pilgrimage, and the Palermitan families who consider it their home Sunday table. The welcome is warm — Di Benedetto herself circulates through the dining room most evenings — and the service retains the unmistakable character of Sicilian hospitality: generous, knowledgeable, and intimately interested in the guest's enjoyment.

Why This Is Palermo’s Proposal Pick

For a proposal in Palermo, Bye Bye Blues is the definitive choice. The Mondello location creates the sense of a dedicated evening away from the city proper — a twenty-minute taxi from the Kalsa, but a complete change of atmosphere. The Belle Époque shoreline with its pastel villas provides a backdrop of quiet grandeur. The Michelin-starred tasting menu delivers the kind of ceremonial progression that a life-defining question deserves. And the personal welcome from Patrizia Di Benedetto herself adds a note of human warmth that no anonymous fine-dining room can replicate. Request the window table facing the garden.
