New Delhi — Khan Market
#14 in New Delhi  •  Critically Acclaimed  •  Modern European-Indian

TRES

The Khan Market room where European technique and Indian ingredients have been having a serious conversation since 2013 — small, precise, and the most intellectually honest fusion restaurant in Delhi.

The Verdict

TRES occupies a compact space on the upper level of Khan Market — Delhi's most curated neighbourhood of independent shops and restaurants — and has operated since 2013 on the premise that European culinary technique and Indian ingredients are not categories in opposition but in natural conversation. The kitchen applies classical French mise en place discipline to a larder that draws on the subcontinent's extraordinary spice, herb, and produce traditions, producing food that is simultaneously identifiable as European in structure and distinctly Indian in flavour.

The amuse-bouche sequence demonstrates the synthesis immediately: a preparation that resembles a French beurre blanc in technique arrives carrying a spice combination that is recognisably Keralan. A lamb preparation that uses the structural approach of a French braise contains a spice architecture from Rajasthan that would be unrecognisable in Lyon. The desserts extend the conversation: a millefeuille with saffron and cardamom, a chocolate preparation with Tellicherry pepper. None of these feel arbitrary. They feel like the result of a chef who has genuinely digested both traditions.

The fifty-seat room is among the most comfortable dining experiences in Delhi — small enough that the service is personal, large enough that the atmosphere does not collapse into the self-consciousness of a small counter restaurant. Khan Market's pedestrian character means the approach to the restaurant is pleasant rather than logistically demanding. The wine list is focused and well-chosen, with an emphasis on European wines that complement the spice profiles the kitchen employs.

Why It Works for a First Date

Tres delivers the combination that a first date in Delhi benefits from: genuinely interesting food that generates conversation, a room that is intimate without being oppressive, and a price point that communicates investment without intimidation. The European-Indian synthesis provides a natural topic — the moment when a French preparation arrives with an unexpected spice note creates exactly the kind of shared surprise that first dates remember. The Khan Market location is easy to reach and the neighbourhood is pleasant to walk through afterward.
