The Lungomare Seafood Terrace

Naples's Lungomare — the seafront promenade that runs from Mergellina to Castel dell'Ovo — has the city's most direct relationship to the Bay of Naples and to the sea that defines Neapolitan cooking. Pescheria Azzurra is one of the rooms that anchors the seafront's serious seafood tradition: a terrace looking across the bay to Vesuvius, a kitchen oriented around the daily catch, a format that has barely changed in a generation.

The cooking is Neapolitan seafood at its most direct: spaghetti alle vongole made with proper clams and the right olive oil; linguine al frutti di mare built around the day's haul; whole fish grilled or baked in salt; raw oysters and crudo selections that any serious Naples seafood diner expects. Wine list runs through Campania whites; the staff will guide.

What to Order

Spaghetti alle vongole first — it is the dish the kitchen has been making for decades and it remains one of the best in the city. Crudo selection as a starter — the fish from the morning's market, served with proper olive oil and lemon. Whole branzino in salt crust for two; octopus salad as a lighter starter. The desserts are short and traditional.

The View

The terrace looks out across the bay. Mid-distance, the small fishing boats moving between the headlands. Far-distance, the silhouette of Vesuvius rising behind Portici. The lighting at sunset is among the most flattering in any European dining room — soft, slightly orange, the kind of light that makes a long evening expand naturally.

Best Occasion: Anniversary

An anniversary at Pescheria Azzurra is a Neapolitan classic for the right reasons. The view, the seafood, the considered pace, the wine list that lets the dinner ascend at whatever rate suits the evening. The kitchen and front-of-house team will quietly handle whatever the occasion needs. Few Italian rooms combine this much atmosphere with this much actual cooking competence.
