The Verdict
Meng Du Hui is a one-Michelin-starred modern Jiangsu restaurant in the Jianye lakeside district, awarded the star in the 2024 Michelin Guide Jiangsu edition and retaining it in the 2025 update. The restaurant was opened in 2019 by a chef who had trained in both the Anhui and Jiangsu traditions, and the kitchen's unique position — combining the Anhui emphasis on preserved ingredients with the Jiangsu emphasis on delicate freshwater-produce — has been the Michelin inspectors' specific citation.
The menu is tasting-only — a ten-course degustation that changes with the season, anchored by the Jiangsu duck preparations (pressed duck, salt-duck, a red-braised duck that is the chef's signature) and the Anhui preserved-vegetable and mountain-ham dishes that the owner brings from his native province. The autumn menu features the hairy crab from Lake Taihu and the river fish from the Yangtze; the spring menu features the bamboo shoots and the freshwater prawns. Each course is paired with a traditional Chinese tea programme and, optionally, with a Baijiu pairing that the restaurant has built over five years.
The dining room seats approximately 40 across the main hall and three private rooms of 6, 8, and 12. The private rooms are the preferred setting for the serious business dinner — full acoustic privacy, a dedicated server, and the option to extend the tasting menu with custom courses not on the public menu. The main hall is configured in the traditional Chinese circular-table format and the tables are set with reproductions of Ming-era ceramics that the owner commissioned from a Jingdezhen workshop.
Service is the most technically serious in Nanjing — each course is explained by the sommelier who coordinates the tea and Baijiu pairings, and the chef appears in the dining room at least once per service to present the signature courses. Meng Du Hui is the Jiangsu table at its Michelin-expected register, and for the diner who is building a Chinese-fine-dining map, it is the Nanjing essential.
Why It Works for Impress Clients
Meng Du Hui is the Nanjing client-dinner for a counterparty who values technically serious regional Chinese cuisine at the Michelin register. A tasting menu that runs to ten courses of modern Jiangsu-Anhui cooking, a private dining room that accommodates six to twelve, and a chef-driven operation that sources its produce to within a 200-kilometre radius. For the client who recognises the Michelin programme, this is the Nanjing answer; no other restaurant in Jiangsu matches its combination of cultural specificity and technical seriousness.
