"A 19th-century mansion turned taverna — the old-town's most atmospheric traditional room and the best corner for a family birthday."
Paleo Archontiko operates in a restored 19th-century Nafpliot mansion on Ypsilandou street, one minute from Kolokotroni Square. The restaurant has been in the building since 1990. The interior preserves period stonework, original wooden beams, and a fireplace that is lit from November through March; the front courtyard with a mulberry tree is the summer room.
The kitchen cooks classical taverna food to a higher standard than most. Signatures include a kleftiko (slow-roasted lamb in parchment), a whole grilled sea bass with Kalamata oil and lemon, the house moussaka (made daily and baked to order), and a pork tigania flambéed with Metaxa in the dining room. The spanakorizo (spinach and rice) is the standout vegetable side.
The wine list carries forty Peloponnesian producers with particular depth in Nemea. The house carafe wine is a red Agiorgitiko drawn from a family barrel; it is better than most bottled options.
Service is warm and Greek-informal. A live bouzouki player is present from 21:00 Friday and Saturday, which is either charming or too-much depending on the evening.
For a birthday of six to twelve, the mansion's front room around the fireplace (winter) or the mulberry courtyard (summer) provide the Nafplio atmosphere that everyone remembers. The kitchen will happily prepare a whole spit-roast lamb for larger parties with forty-eight hours' notice.
Booked the mansion front room for my father's seventieth. The kleftiko arrived wrapped in paper and unwrapped at the table. The bouzouki player knew his favourite songs.
The mulberry courtyard in September was the point. The grilled bass was executed perfectly. Second date followed.
