The Verdict
Alex Sanchez was raised in California, trained at New York's Eleven Madison Park during the Daniel Humm era, and arrived in India to launch The Table in Colaba in 2011 — a kitchen that defined modern Mumbai dining for almost a decade. Americano is his solo project, opened in Kala Ghoda in 2021, and represents Sanchez's distillation of his New York training into a more personal and accessible format. The room is intentionally informal — exposed brick, open kitchen, an Italian-leaning bar programme — but the cooking is among the most rigorous in the city.
The menu is built around two pillars: hand-made pasta and dry-aged meat. The pasta programme uses Indian flours from specific producers — a Punjab durum, a Karnataka emmer — and runs a daily rotation of fresh shapes. The signature is a hand-rolled tagliatelle with a slow-cooked oxtail ragù that has become one of the most photographed dishes in Mumbai. The meat programme draws on a custom-built dry-ageing room at the back of the restaurant, with cuts available from twenty-one to ninety days. The wood-fired hearth produces some of the best pizzas in the country.
The wine list is one of Mumbai's most thoughtful, with a serious focus on Italian wines and a strong showing of Indian producers. The cocktail programme is led by an ex-New York bartender and has become a destination in itself. From ₹4,500 the value is excellent — Americano sits below the Mumbai top tier on price but the chef's training, the ingredient sourcing, and the kitchen's execution are at the highest end of the city's market.
Why It Works for First Date
Americano is one of Mumbai's great first-date restaurants — the room is sophisticated without being intimidating, the menu has the broad accessibility of pasta and steak with the technical rigour of a chef-driven kitchen, and the bar programme makes the entire evening flow. For a birthday with a small group, the kitchen will coordinate celebrations gracefully. For closing a deal in Kala Ghoda's heritage district, the address signals taste and longevity.
