The Experience

Perched above Cannery Row at the Monterey Plaza Hotel, Coastal Kitchen has established itself as the Peninsula's most consistently impressive hotel restaurant — a category that, at most addresses, damns with faint praise, but here is a genuine distinction. Chef Michael Rotondo's pedigree is impeccable: former executive chef of the Ritz-Carlton San Francisco, former executive chef of Charlie Trotter's in Chicago, and the U.S. Bocuse d'Or's Most Promising Chef of 2008. He brings to Coastal Kitchen a level of technique and creative intelligence that most standalone fine dining restaurants struggle to achieve.

The setting is extraordinary. Every table faces the Monterey Bay, framed by floor-to-ceiling windows that make the Pacific feel like a living wall of sapphire and silver. The hotel provides binoculars at each table — a small touch that reveals the restaurant's understanding of what it means to dine in one of the world's most remarkable marine environments. Sea otters are a regular feature of the view. On clear evenings, the light on the bay is something close to transcendent.

The menu offers two routes: the Choice Menu at $95 per person (three courses with à la carte beverages) and the Chef's Selection tasting menu at $155 (five to six courses with optional sommelier wine pairings). Signature preparations include a black cod preparation of ethereal butteriness, Australian black truffle pasta that reflects Rotondo's French training without deference to it, and Wagyu beef cuts selected with obsessive care. Sunday brunch ($75, with free-flowing sparkling wine) is among the most civilised ways to spend a Monterey morning.

The service is warm, professional, and genuinely attentive — the restaurant's small size means that staff ratios are high and everyone at the table is known by name before the second course. This is hotel dining operating at a level that independent restaurants should aspire to.

Best For: Impress Clients

Coastal Kitchen is the Peninsula's definitive client entertainment venue for one decisive reason: it communicates everything the right impression requires. The Michelin recognition, the panoramic bay views, the Ritz-Carlton-trained chef, the Monterey Plaza Hotel address — taken together, these elements create an environment where a client understands, without being told, that they are at someone's best table. The formal option of the Chef's Selection tasting menu allows the host to present a structured, memorable meal rather than navigating menu choices across the table.

The private dining room configuration, available for groups, makes Coastal Kitchen equally suitable for closing deals in controlled, distraction-free environments. For proposals, the corner bay-view tables — request one when booking — provide the drama of the Pacific and the privacy of the room's intimate scale. Book via OpenTable 1-2 weeks in advance; contact the hotel directly for private room enquiries.
