About Little River Inn

Two miles south of Mendocino Village, where Highway 1 bends around a headland above Van Damme Bay, the Little River Inn has been in the same family since 1939. Five generations later it remains precisely what a great coastal inn ought to be: a white clapboard main house with a broad verandah, gardens tumbling toward the ocean, a golf course on the bluff, and a dining room pitched with windows that catch every last moment of sunset over the Pacific.

Chef Jason Azevedo has sharpened the kitchen in recent years, bringing a modern twist to the classic American-regional cuisine that is the inn's DNA. Petrale sole, Dungeness crab in season, local lamb, Niman Ranch pork — the menu reads like a love letter to Northern California's coastal larder, executed with a lightness of touch that honours the old-school roots without feeling stuck in them. The wine list leans hard on Anderson Valley and Sonoma, because that is what the neighbours grow.

The dish everyone comes for — and returns for — is the clam chowder. Made with clams in the shell, repeatedly named one of the best in the country by travel magazines, it is a thing of quiet, well-executed certainty: cream, butter, a bit of time, and nothing to prove. Dinner is served Sunday through Thursday 6:00–8:30pm, and Friday and Saturday 6:00–9:00pm. Breakfast runs Monday to Saturday 8:00–10:30am and Sunday 8:00am–12:00pm — with ocean views that justify the early rise.

This is a dining room with no ambition to be surprising. Its ambition is to be reliably excellent, to feed families who have been coming for half a century, and to welcome the newcomer as the newest participant in a very long and very comfortable tradition. That is a rarer thing in California than it ought to be.

Why It Is Perfect for First Date

Little River Inn is the date that says "I know the coast" without trying too hard. The drive down Highway 1, the verandah, the sunset dining room, the clam chowder that gives you something specific to talk about — these are the conditions of a low-stakes, high-return first dinner. The menu has enough range that any dietary preference finds a home, and the service is family-friendly warm rather than performatively polished. You will not be competing with the restaurant for attention.

Why It Is Perfect for Team Dinner

For a team dinner on the coast, Little River Inn is the room that just works. The dining spaces accommodate groups without needing to separate them off into airless private rooms; the menu is broad enough that everyone orders happily; the prices are civilised in a way that stops conversation from drifting to expense reports. The golf course, gardens, and bar give a team reasons to linger before and after dinner — and on a coastal team weekend, lingering is the entire point.
