About Le Refuge

Le Refuge has run on rue du Téléphérique de Rochebrune since 1965 and is the village's resident Savoyard institution — the wood-shingled chalet that almost every other 'authentic alpine' restaurant in France is in some sense imitating. The walls are unfinished larch, the ceiling is a hand-carved alpine sky, the bar is a single piece of timber from the 1880s, and the cast-iron Godin stove at the back of the room runs from late November to early April.

The menu has not changed materially in forty years. The Savoyarde fondue uses a 50-50 Beaufort and Comté blend; the raclette is half-wheel from the Savoyard cooperative ten kilometres south; the tartiflette is built in cast iron with hand-pulled Reblochon and oak-smoked lardons; the diots-aux-vins are Aravis pork in white Crépy. There is a five-course Savoyard tasting menu at €68 that is the cheapest serious meal in Megève. Cheese cellar runs to thirty-plus regional varieties.

The wine list is short, regional, and well-priced — Mondeuse from Arbin, Roussette de Savoie, Apremont, Jacquère, with a small section of Bugey reds and a deliberate handful of Northern Rhône for guests who want a darker option. Glass pours start at €7; the most expensive bottle on the list is a single producer from Apremont at €110.

Service is entirely Dolfo-family — second and third generation now in the kitchen and at the pass — and unhurried in a way that no village brasserie can match. Le Refuge is also the only 1965-vintage Megève dining room still in the same family ownership. It is the village's institutional baseline and the meal locals will quietly recommend over Flocons when a visiting friend has only one night.

Why It's Perfect for Team Dinner

Le Refuge is the team-dinner room in Megève. The shared-fondue format guarantees conversation; the cast-iron fire warms a table of eight in a way no two-star room can; the wine list is forgiving on a multi-bottle dinner. It is also the easy-first-date answer when both diners want Alpine atmosphere without the seven-course pacing of a tasting menu. Book the long banquette table at the back next to the stove.
