Arabesque

Floor-to-ceiling views of the Haram from a Sofitel dining room designed with the restraint the city deserves — cream upholstery, polished wood, a grill menu that executes.

The Verdict

Arabesque is the principal restaurant at Sofitel Shahd Al Madinah, the French hospitality group's flagship property in the city. The design is restrained by Saudi hotel standards — polished wood floors, cream-upholstered armchairs, a muted palette of bronze, charcoal and ivory — with the architectural gesture reserved for the floor-to-ceiling windows that open onto the Masjid an-Nabawi and its green dome. At sunset the entire back wall of the restaurant becomes a view corridor, and tables along that line are the most requested bookings in the hotel.

The menu is pan-Mediterranean with a Middle Eastern orientation — the format of grilled meats, fresh seafood, house-made flatbreads, and composed mezze platters that is standard across high-end Gulf hotel dining but executed here with unusual consistency. The kitchen runs a wood-fired grill visible from the dining room and a separate cold kitchen for the extensive mezze and seafood starters. Signature dishes include the mixed seafood grill platter for two; lamb rack with a date and pomegranate reduction; the Arabesque mezze selection that serves as a shared opener for a table of four or more; and a saffron-scented crème brûlée with Arabic coffee.

Service at Sofitel is consistent with the brand's French hospitality training — more reserved than the Arabian norm, with extended intervals between courses that feel appropriate to the pace of the city. The mocktail programme is among the more creative in central Medina, with a particular focus on Arabic coffee-based non-alcoholic cocktails.

Why It Works for Birthday

Arabesque works for Birthday and First Date dining — the room is intimate without being precious, the views are among the best in the city, and the price point sits below the Oberoi or hotel rooftops while still delivering at a fine-dining register. For Saudi couples and young families celebrating milestones during an Umrah trip, it is a common and well-regarded choice.
