Lancer's Inn Restaurant — British / Southern African, Maseru
Lancer's Inn is the oldest continuously operating hotel in Maseru, its restaurant serving the city since before Lesotho's independence in 1966. The dining room carries the institutional charm of a place that has survived everything — political upheavals, floods, the good years and the difficult ones — with the consistency of a kitchen that believes in reliability above adventure.
The menu is unapologetically traditional: trout from the highland rivers prepared in the classical British manner (grilled with almonds and lemon butter, or smoked and served with capers), Sunday roast with Yorkshire pudding and roasted Lesotho root vegetables, and the steaks from highland Basotho cattle that provide the best argument for Lesotho's agricultural gifts.
The Sunday roast is the week's centrepiece — a Maseru institution attended by the diplomatic community, NGO workers with homesick British colleagues, and local families who have been coming since their parents brought them. Book early.
The beer list includes Castle, Maluti (Lesotho's own mountain lager), and a rotating selection of South African craft beers. The Maluti, named for the Maluti Mountains that surround the city, is the correct choice for highland dining.
Best Occasion: Great for Birthdays
The Sunday roast as a birthday celebration — the Yorkshire pudding, the highland beef, and the institutional warmth of a room that has been celebrating things since 1947.
Best Occasion: Works for Team Dinners
The inn format — generous portions, communal tables, Maluti beer in rounds — provides the conditions for a team dinner that is both satisfying and culturally specific to Lesotho.
