The PCH institution that bikers, surfers, and celebrities have shared for sixty years — fried clams, cold beer, and a Pacific view without a tablecloth in sight.
Neptune's Net has been operating on this stretch of Pacific Coast Highway since 1956, and in seventy years it has become one of the most democratic dining institutions in Los Angeles. The motorcyclists park alongside the surfers. The celebrities sit at the same picnic benches as the county workers. Everyone has the same view of the Pacific and the same paper tray of fried clams, and no one is pretending otherwise. There are tablecloths at many excellent Malibu restaurants. Neptune's Net has never needed one.
The format is counter service and casual to the point of ceremonial simplicity. You queue, you order, you find a table — inside or at the outdoor picnic benches that face the water — and you eat seafood that is as fresh as its proximity to the ocean suggests. Fried clams are the signature; the steamed shrimp, ordered by weight and piled onto paper, are a close second. The clam chowder is serious. The beer is cold. The Californian afternoon light on the water is free.
Neptune's Net has appeared in Point Break, Fast and the Furious, and Iron Man 3. It has been written up in every major travel publication. None of this has changed it in any meaningful way, which is precisely the point. A team dinner here is a deliberate choice to sidestep formality in favour of something genuine — a meal that is memorable because of its honesty rather than its price tag. Ranked #12 among Malibu restaurants, it earns the highest value score of any restaurant in the city at 9/10.
