About Amadeus
Amadeus has been a fixture of Lviv's cultural centre for decades, occupying a prime position on Katedralna Square — the small piazza that faces the Latin (Roman Catholic) Cathedral, one of the city's most beautiful Gothic structures. This is the restaurant that Lviv residents take their visiting family to when they want to show the city off. That durability is earned: Amadeus delivers a genuinely romantic, genuinely excellent dinner with a consistency that newer establishments struggle to match.
The interior is best described as Old Austrian Lviv — mahogany furniture, soft lighting, paintings by early-20th-century Lviv artists, and that particular warmth of a room that has been polished by decades of use. Two halls and a summer terrace give the restaurant flexibility; the terrace, facing the cathedral's stone facade, is one of the most photographed dining settings in the city. In the afternoon, the soundtrack is gentle background music. After 20:00, a violinist takes over — not as a gimmick, but as a genuine nightly tradition that has been running for years.
The kitchen serves a menu that balances Ukrainian classics with European technique. Every steak is cooked in a wood-fired oven — a deliberate statement of intent in a city where many restaurants rely on electric grills. The result is a depth of flavour and crust that is noticeably different. The red wine collection is the best in the immediate area, and the sommelier — a rarity for a restaurant at this price point — can guide you through Ukrainian and international options with equal confidence. Breakfast is worth noting: the morning Swedish table with freshly baked croissants, pastries, and coffee is an institution among Lviv's creative and business class, reservations recommended.
Amadeus is not the most innovative or daring restaurant in Lviv. It does not need to be. What it offers — a perfectly executed romantic dinner in one of Europe's most beautiful old town squares, with live music, wood-fired cooking, and attentive service — is irreplaceable. For any occasion that requires beauty, intimacy, and dependability, Amadeus is the answer.
The cathedral terrace at Amadeus removes all the stress from a first date. The setting does the heavy lifting — the Gothic stonework opposite, the warm candlelight, the violin at 20:00 — so you can focus entirely on each other. The menu is approachable enough for guests unfamiliar with Ukrainian cuisine, but distinctive enough to be a conversation point. Wood-fired steaks, strong red wines, and a dessert menu that leans into Lviv's pastry heritage: it is the kind of dinner that is remembered. Amadeus has been the venue for more first-date successes in Lviv than any other restaurant. There is a reason for that.
