About Dastarkhwan-e-Lucknow (Hazratganj)

Dastarkhwan opened in 1986 on Hazratganj's main avenue and has since become the most-recommended single Lucknow restaurant for visiting travellers — the Chowk originals are more historic, but the Chowk rooms are basic and the menus are limited to one or two specialties; Dastarkhwan offers the full Awadhi-Mughlai multi-course experience in a presentable air-conditioned dining room with English menus and proper table service. The brand has grown to two Lucknow locations (Hazratganj and Gomti Nagar) plus a half-dozen branches in other Indian cities.

The menu is broad. Starters include Tunday-style galouti kebab (₹250 for six), Lucknowi shami kebab (₹220), kakori seekh kebab (₹280), boti kebab (₹320), and reshmi tikka. Mains include Awadhi mutton biryani (₹420), Lucknowi nihari (₹380), the famous Awadhi nalli nihari with bone-marrow (₹450), mutton korma (₹360), butter chicken (₹320), and a vegetable dum biryani (₹260). Breads — sheermal, rumali roti, and the Lucknow-specific kulcha — all baked in-house. A multi-course meal for two with kebab starters, a biryani, a curry, breads, and dessert runs ₹1,400-2,200.

The room seats one hundred across two floors with bay windows facing the Hazratganj avenue. Capacity is heavy on Friday-Saturday evenings; reservations a day ahead are useful for groups; walk-ins for two or four work outside peak hours. Cards are accepted; the staff speak English; the menu is detailed and explains the regional dish backgrounds in English for visiting diners.

What makes Dastarkhwan the right traveller's-choice rather than the Chowk originals is the breadth — you eat the full Awadhi spread (kebabs, biryani, korma, nihari, breads, dessert) in one sitting in one comfortable dining room, with the safety of English-language explanations and proper table service. The Chowk originals are better at their single specialties; Dastarkhwan is better as a complete Awadhi introduction.
