About ROKA Charlotte Street
ROKA Charlotte Street opened in 2004 as the Fitzrovia sister to Rainer Becker's Zuma in Knightsbridge and has since expanded into a global group (Mayfair, Aldwych, Canary Wharf, Dubai, New York, Hong Kong). The original Charlotte Street site remains the benchmark: a horseshoe counter surrounding the central robata grill, open kitchen wrap-around, and a downstairs Shochu Lounge that operates until late.
The menu is contemporary Japanese with a robata-forward centre of gravity — char-grilled black cod, lamb cutlets, the signature whisky-marinated lamb chops, seasonal fish skewers — alongside sushi and sashimi sections that hold their own against dedicated sushi restaurants. Portions are sized for sharing and the restaurant is best ordered that way.
The room is one of the best-composed Japanese dining rooms in London: oak-heavy, warm lighting, and a volume that favours atmosphere without shouting. Service is international-polished. The wine and sake lists are deep; the Shochu Lounge downstairs is one of the more serious Japanese-spirits programmes in the West End.
Best Occasion Fit
ROKA is a birthday and team-dinner default. The sharing menu suits groups, the robata theatre gives the evening energy, and the Charlotte Street address is walkable from most Fitzrovia and Mayfair offices. Twenty years of consistency make it one of the safest Japanese dinner reservations in London.
