About J Sheekey

J Sheekey has operated on St Martin's Court since 1893, tucked into the pedestrian lane between Charing Cross Road and St Martin's Lane that connects Leicester Square to the back of the Noel Coward Theatre. It is the Caprice Holdings group's most consistent restaurant and has been the West End's seafood default for more than a century.

The menu is a seafood greatest-hits: Cornish oysters, potted shrimp, jellied eels, fish pie, grilled dover sole, the signature fish cake, and a lobster section that runs the full range from thermidor to grilled. The adjoining Oyster Bar — six seats at a counter, walk-ins only — is among the best solo-dining options in the West End for anyone with an hour to spare.

The dining room is warm, low-ceilinged, and styled after a Victorian ship's cabin: brass lamps, dark wood panelling, walls covered in framed black-and-white photographs of theatre-industry patrons. Service is Caprice-professional and has handled the post-theatre rush without losing composure for decades.

Best Occasion Fit

J Sheekey closes West End deals. The location puts the restaurant five minutes from the Savoy and ten minutes from Mayfair; the seafood menu handles the lowest-common-denominator guest without sacrificing the kitchen's credibility; and the theatreland association gives the evening an easy extension. For deals with theatre tickets attached, it is the London default.
