Livingstone Island Picnic — Bush Picnic / International, Livingstone
Livingstone Island is a small island in the middle of the Zambezi River, metres from the edge of Victoria Falls — the point from which David Livingstone first viewed the Falls in 1855 and gave them the name that persists in most languages. Access is by boat from the Royal Livingstone Hotel.
The picnic experience is straightforward: guests swim to Devil's Pool (a natural rock pool at the very edge of the Falls, where the current creates a holding eddy), then dry off for a champagne picnic served on the island by a dedicated guide. The picnic includes sandwiches, salads, fruit, and the champagne that the occasion demands.
The view from Livingstone Island — the Zambezi dropping 108 metres into the gorge, the spray creating rainbows, and the roar of the Falls providing the soundtrack — is among the most powerful natural experiences on earth. Eating beside it is an act of intentional theatre that justifies the price entirely.
The experience is available only during the low-water season (September to December) when Devil's Pool is accessible. During high water (February to July), the island is too dangerous to reach. Book months in advance.
