About Zé da Mouraria

Zé da Mouraria is a family tasca on Rua João do Outeiro in the Mouraria, the Lisbon quarter where fado was born. The grandmother opened it in 1978; her son carried it on, and her grandson keeps the recipes going — three generations in one tiny tiled room.

It earns its place in our seafood coverage for one dish in particular, and for being the real article: no tourist staging, just generous Portuguese home cooking and a counter full of locals.

The Kitchen

The signature is bacalhau à lagareiro — a thick loin of salt cod bathed in olive oil with fried garlic and coriander, served with smashed potatoes, chickpeas and sautéed greens. It is widely rated among the best in the city. The rest of the board is classic tasca: grilled fish, octopus, and hearty meat plates.

Portions are enormous. The standing advice is that two adults can comfortably share a single main, which is part of why the value here is unbeatable.

The Room

The room is tiny, plain and tiled, with a handful of tables and a busy counter — a genuine Lisbon tasca rather than a styled one. It fills with regulars and in-the-know visitors, and turns over quickly at lunch.
