Anjos's Defended Tasca
Lisbon's Anjos sits north of the central tourist circuit — a residential neighbourhood that has held its character against the city's gentrification. Tasca do Lagoa is one of the small rooms locals have defended by simply continuing to fill: a proper tasca, family-run, more carefully cooked than the unfussy format suggests.
The cooking is traditional Portuguese in its proper register: bacalhau in several preparations, slow-cooked meats, the regional seafood that Lisbon's market still delivers. The wine list is short, regional, and well-priced.
What to Order
Bacalhau à Brás as a benchmark; polvo à lagareiro, the slow-cooked octopus; cabrito assado when on. The wine list rewards a Douro red ordered with care.
The Format
The room is small and unfussy. Tables are close, staff are direct, locals dominate. There is no scene to navigate.
Best Occasion: First Date
Tasca do Lagoa is a quiet Lisbon first-date win. The intimacy, the seriousness of the cooking, the modest pricing combine into the kind of evening conventional first-date rooms struggle to produce.
