Latitude Restaurant at Latitude 13° — International / African, Lilongwe
Latitude 13° is Lilongwe's first design hotel — a striking building of local stone and timber that has brought architectural self-consciousness to a city previously content with generic business-hotel formula. The restaurant occupies a double-height space with floor-to-ceiling windows facing a pool and garden of indigenous plantings.
The kitchen is the most ambitious in Malawi, with a menu that integrates local ingredients into an international framework with genuine confidence. Chambo (Lake Malawi's signature tilapia) is served with tamarind-butter sauce; nsima (white maize porridge, Malawi's staple) appears alongside a demi-glace reduction in ways that demonstrate respect rather than condescension.
Breakfast is exceptional — freshly-baked bread, seasonal fruit from local farms, eggs cooked to order, and a filter coffee from Malawi's own Satemwa estate. It has become the default morning meeting point for Lilongwe's NGO and diplomatic community.
The bar produces some of the most creative cocktails in the country, using local ingredients including baobab, moringa, and hibiscus. The wine list is short but thoughtfully chosen, with South African selections dominating at fair prices.
