Chennai Spice — Indian / South Indian, Lilongwe
Indian cuisine has deep roots in Malawi, where South Asian traders and their descendants have been present since the late nineteenth century. Chennai Spice cooks for this community first and welcomes everyone else second — which means the food is calibrated to the standard of people who know what it should taste like.
South Indian specialities are the reason to visit: masala dosa with sambar and three chutneys, idli served at breakfast and lunch, and a rasam that settles the stomach and the soul in equal measure. The North Indian menu is also excellent — butter chicken, dal makhani, and a biryani that takes four hours to cook and is served only in advance order.
The lunch thali offers the best value in Lilongwe — a rotating selection of curries, rice, roti, and dal that changes daily and costs a fraction of what it would in Nairobi or London. Arrive before 1pm to guarantee the full selection.
The lassi — mango or plain — is exceptional. Made with full-fat milk and blended to order, it is a perfect antidote to the Malawian heat and an ideal way to end any meal here.
Best Occasion: Ideal for Group Birthdays
The thali format is naturally celebratory — sharing dishes, comparing notes, and working through the menu together. The kitchen will prepare a special biryani for advance-ordered group bookings.
Best Occasion: Works for Team Dinners
Indian food is inherently communal. Multiple curries served family-style, roti for tearing and sharing, and the natural conversation-starter of 'what are you ordering?' The value is extraordinary for group dining.
