N's Kitchen

The foreigner-run Western-menu retreat on Xinyi Street — burgers, wood-fired pizza, and a surprisingly deep craft-beer list, in a converted courtyard home that has been Lijiang's expat meeting point for a decade.

The Experience

N's Kitchen is the American-run Western-menu restaurant on Xinyi Street — one of the Old Town's northern lanes — and has been, since opening in the mid-2010s, the meeting point for Lijiang's small resident expat community and the long-term-stay international visitors who fill the guesthouses during the spring and autumn seasons. The space is a converted Qing-era courtyard home with the central courtyard glassed over into an atrium, wood floors throughout, and a long bar along one wall that functions as both service bar and counter-dining option. The feel is neighbourhood-bistro rather than tourist-restaurant.

The menu is Western-focused — burgers (grass-fed Yunnan beef, thick-cut fries), wood-fired pizza (the oven is the centrepiece), pasta (carbonara, puttanesca, a black-truffle option in season), salads, and a brunch menu (07:00–11:00 daily) with eggs-Benedict, pancakes, proper coffee, and Yunnan-grown fresh-squeezed juices. The brunch programme has become the informal Sunday meeting point for the expat crowd. Vegetarian options are numerous and well-executed; vegan options, marked on the menu, are a rarity in Lijiang and draw a small but loyal clientele.

The craft-beer list is the surprise: twelve taps rotating between Chinese craft (Jing-A from Beijing, Panda Brew from Dali, Shangri-La Brewing), imported (Sierra Nevada, Brewdog, a rotating Belgian selection), and two house-collaboration beers brewed by Dali's Panda Brew to N's specifications. For a Yunnan town this is an unusual depth of programme. Wine is a shorter list — a dozen options, competently chosen. Cocktails are cocktail-bar-standard, not creative, but well-executed.

Reservations are recommended for weekend brunch (which books up by 08:00 for the 10:00–11:30 window) and for the courtyard tables on weekend evenings. The CNY 100–180 per person range covers most meals. Closed Tuesdays (the day the owner uses for supply runs to Kunming). Credit cards are accepted (one of the few Old Town restaurants where this is true); cash, WeChat, and Alipay also accepted.
