About Griggeler Stuba
Griggeler Stuba is the gastronomic restaurant of the Burg Vital Resort — the family-run five-star superior chalet hotel in Oberlech, opened by the Lucian family in 1972 and currently run by the second and third generations — and the most architecturally striking of the Vorarlberg luxury hotel restaurants. The dining room holds two Michelin stars and four GaultMillau toques under chef Sebastian Jakob, who took the kitchen in 2018 and won the second star in 2023.
Jakob's cuisine is contemporary Austrian Alpine with deep regional sourcing. The seven-course tasting rotates seasonally; signatures include a hand-rolled Vorarlberger Käsknöpfle with mountain cheese and brown-butter foam; a slow-cooked Bregenzerwald lamb shoulder with juniper jus and braised endive; a smoked Lake Constance fera with horseradish butter; the famous 'Stubenkönig' — a roasted Bregenzerwald pigeon with red-cabbage purée that has won Jakob multiple regional cooking honours; a hot Schnaps-glazed Topfen-soufflé for the dessert course.
The wine list is genuinely exceptional — 1,400 references with deep coverage of Austrian Wachau and Burgenland producers, Italian Alpine smallholders, and a serious Burgundy and Champagne section. Sommelier Annette Steck runs the floor as one of Austria's most decorated sommeliers and the pairing flight at €165 is among the best wine values in any two-star room in the German-speaking Alps. The cellar's Wachau Riesling vertical is the deepest in any Vorarlberg restaurant.
The dining room holds twenty-four covers across eight tables — wood-panelled, low-amber-pendant lit, with a single full-height picture window onto the Oberlech panorama. Service is family-run and Vorarlberger-warm — the Lucian siblings rotate the floor, the captain has worked the property since 2010, and the kitchen pacing is unhurried. The hotel itself is forty-five rooms; most diners stay overnight which lets the kitchen run without watching the clock.
Why It's Perfect for Proposal
Griggeler Stuba is the proposal-grade table for a Lech week. The twenty-four-cover room means total privacy, the picture-window view onto Oberlech at sunset is among the most photographed dinner views in the Vorarlberg Alps, and the seven-course pacing is unhurried. Brief the captain three days ahead and ask for the corner two-top at the south-facing window — the team have done dozens of proposals across the years and time the moment with the cheese course.
