About Capriccio

Capriccio sits on the western shore of Lake Garda in Manerba, opened in 1965 by Francesco and Giuliana Germiniasi and run by Giuliana ever since — a kitchen the family has steered for sixty years and a Michelin star they have held onto with the discipline of a long-distance runner. The restaurant occupies a modest building on Piazza San Bernardo, set back slightly from the lake, with a covered terrace that catches the southern light through cypress and oleander.

The cooking is intentional, traditional, and quietly creative. Lake-fish primi — ravioli of pike with sage butter; risotto of carpione with saffron — sit alongside more cosmopolitan secondi: roast Adriatic turbot with capers and lemon, suckling pig with cipolline onions, slow-cooked Iberico cheek. The bread programme is unusually serious for a small starred kitchen, and the desserts — a millefoglie of summer fruit and Garda olive oil ice cream — are the work of a pastry chef who clearly enjoys what she does.

The room is restrained: pale walls, dark beams, white linen, glassware Capriccio has used for decades. The wine list focuses on Lombardy and Veneto with a deep Champagne section and a particular fondness for Franciacorta, which sommelier Marina Germiniasi (Giuliana's daughter) leads through with the kind of patient hospitality that the rest of Italian fine dining has begun to lose. Service is matriarchal in the best sense — watchful, warm, never intrusive.

Capriccio is the western lake's quiet alternative to the louder names two coves north. The kitchen has been at one star for so long that it operates without anxiety; the room treats every guest as if they had been booking for thirty years. The menu changes four times a year, follows the lake, and never tries to be anything except what it is. It is a restaurant that rewards a regular table, and that builds repeat visits in a way that newer rooms cannot.

Why It's Perfect for Birthday

Capriccio is a birthday dinner without theatre. The terrace seats a party of six comfortably; the kitchen will handle a bespoke cake on twelve hours' notice; the sommelier will source a Franciacorta vintage from the year you were born if you ask politely a week ahead. It is the rare Michelin one-star that handles a celebration with the calm of a country wedding. For a milestone evening on the lake that does not want a four-hour tasting, this is the most considered room.
