About Cooco's Den

Cooco's Den is the restaurant that made Fort Road a food street. The artist Iqbal Hussain opened it in 1996 on the rooftop of his ancestral three-storey house in the Walled City, near Roshnai Gate — Pakistan's first rooftop restaurant. The lower floors hold a gallery of Hussain's paintings and antiques; the climb up the narrow stairs is part of the experience.

What draws diners up onto the roof is the view: from the open-air tables, the floodlit Badshahi Mosque and Lahore Fort glow like jewels against the night sky. The food is traditional Lahori cooking, and while the kitchen is good, the setting is what people come back for — a tikka-and-karahi dinner with one of the great views in South Asia.

The Kitchen

The menu is classic Lahori. The signature is the tawa chicken — chicken seared on a flat iron griddle — best mopped up with qandhari naan, alongside chicken karahi, mutton karahi, tikka and the usual grilled and curried plates. It is hearty, generous home-style cooking rather than fine dining.

Prices sit above the neighbourhood average — a meal for two with karahi, tikka, sides, rice and drinks runs around Rs 4,800 — but diners agree the ambience, the scenery and the quality justify the premium. Come for the rooftop and the classics, not for culinary fireworks.

The Room

The rooftop is small — a wooden canopy over roughly eight tables — which is exactly why it feels special, with the Mosque and Fort filling the skyline. On a moonlit night, the floodlit monuments make this one of the most atmospheric tables in Lahore. The building beneath doubles as Hussain's art gallery.

Because seating is limited and the view is in demand, booking ahead — and timing your visit for after dark, when the floodlights are on — is strongly advised. Note that the historic house has steep stairs and no step-free access.

Best for a First Date

The floodlit-monument view and intimate rooftop make Cooco's Den a memorable first date or anniversary in Lahore. The setting also turns a birthday dinner into an occasion — just book ahead for an after-dark table.

Not for

Not for anyone needing step-free access, a quiet refined dining room, or cutting-edge cooking — Cooco's Den is a steep-staircase heritage rooftop where the Badshahi Mosque view, not the kitchen, is the headline.
