1910 La Gare du Sud

The restored French-Yunnan Railway theme restaurant that turned a colonial-era station into the most atmospheric dining room in the province. Yunnan ham-wrapped potato rolls, goat cheese from the Hani villages, a train-carriage interior that could not be invented.

The Experience

1910 La Gare du Sud occupies what was, for most of the twentieth century, one of the strangest railway stations in Asia: the southern terminus of the Yunnan–Vietnam Railway, the metre-gauge French colonial line that connected Kunming to Haiphong. The station closed to passenger traffic in the 1990s and the building fell into long dereliction. When a local restaurateur converted the French-colonial architecture into a restaurant theme, the result became one of China's most carefully realised dining environments — no element theatrical, every element historical.

The menu is Yunnanese with French-colonial touches. The fried potato rolls wrapped in Xuanwei ham are a signature — crisp, salty, a perfect expression of why Yunnan ham is China's best cured pork. Mapo tofu is made with ham rather than minced beef. The house goat cheese, sourced from the Bai and Hani villages of the Cangshan range, comes fried in light batter; it is one of the few Chinese dining rooms where goat cheese plays a role central to the menu. Mushroom hotpot in season, Crossing-the-Bridge Noodles at a level well above the tourist versions, stir-fried wild vegetables that reveal the true range of the Yunnan mountain pantry.

The dining room spans the restored station concourse and a series of period train-carriage booths. Iron lamps, glass-shaded pendant lighting, original advertising posters, a sense of a railway that was both imperial infrastructure and — in the local Yunnanese memory — the first vector of modernity into the province. At 100 RMB per person, the value is genuinely astonishing for a restaurant of this quality of setting; by Shanghai or Beijing equivalence this would be five times the price. It is the easiest first recommendation for any visitor to Kunming.

Reservations through WeChat are advisable at weekends. The Park 1903 location is serviced by taxi and metro (Daqiao Station); the surrounding Park 1903 development — a reconstructed French railway quarter — merits thirty minutes of exploration before or after the meal. The restaurant operates lunch and dinner services, closes for a mid-afternoon break, and serves through to 22:00 nightly.

Why it's perfect for First Date

For a first date in Kunming, 1910 La Gare du Sud is the obvious answer. The dining room offers three critical qualities at once — it is visually distinctive (the railway-station interior is genuinely one-of-one), acoustically conversation-friendly (the period booths absorb sound), and the price point signals care without pressure. The menu is approachable for someone unfamiliar with Yunnanese cuisine but deep enough to reveal real expertise if both diners are curious.
