Aaheli sits inside the Peerless Inn, a mid-range hotel on Chowringhee Road a short walk from the Oberoi Grand. The restaurant has run since 2000 and has quietly collected a stack of Times Food Awards for 'best Bengali cuisine' in Kolkata. It is the city's second reference point for Bengali fine-dining, and regulars argue about which they prefer — Aaheli or 6 Ballygunge.
The menu reads from the cookbooks of the Thakur family — a Bengali Brahmin culinary tradition — and leans slightly more formal and vegetarian-friendly than 6 Ballygunge Place. The shukto (bitter-vegetable medley with poppy seed), the cholar dal, the dhokar dalna (a lentil-cake curry that rarely appears on restaurant menus), and the mochar ghonto (banana-blossom dry curry) are all properly done. The non-vegetarian section covers the standards — ilish bhapa, chingri malai curry, kosha mangsho — with equal precision.
The dining room is smaller and quieter than 6 Ballygunge — perhaps thirty covers, softly lit, cream walls, with Bengali folk art as the decorative accent. Service is formal-courteous, the wine list is limited but adequate, and the pace is deliberately slow. A Bengali thali at Aaheli runs forty-five minutes to an hour if you let it.
Aaheli is the easier first-date choice than 6 Ballygunge for one reason: it is quieter. The room reads as a conversation restaurant rather than a family-event restaurant. For out-of-town visitors staying at the Peerless or the Oberoi Grand, it is also the literal closer walk.
Why it fits First Date
First Date belongs here because Aaheli is the quieter, more intimate Bengali room. A Thakur-family thali eaten across a corner table, at an unhurried pace, with Bengali folk-music playing low — the Kolkata first date that does not try too hard.
