6 Ballygunge Place is the reference point for Bengali fine-dining in India — not just in Kolkata, but anywhere. The restaurant occupies a restored 1920s south-Kolkata villa on a quiet residential street a few minutes from Gariahat. The dining room is spread across two floors with high ceilings, wooden shutters, a red-and-cream colour palette that evokes a genteel Bengali home, and a service style that is deliberate rather than hurried.

The menu is a structured tour of Bengali cooking. The hallmark is the Bengali thali — a vast silver platter with eight to twelve preparations in small brass bowls, ordered either vegetarian or non-vegetarian. The non-vegetarian version includes maachher jhol (fish curry), chingri malai curry (prawn in coconut), kosha mangsho (slow-cooked mutton), shukto, two chutneys, Bengali-style polao rice, luchi, and a dessert course.

The à la carte extends the thali. The ilish (hilsa) fish in mustard sauce is the dish to order when in season; the prawn malai curry is the most copied Kolkata dish globally; the slow-cooked mutton kosha is the single plate that explains why Bengali cooking operates on a different timeline than most Indian regional kitchens. Desserts — mishti doi, sandesh, rosogolla — are made in-house.

The restaurant has expanded to multiple outlets, but the original Ballygunge Place location remains the one to book. For a business lunch or client dinner, the private dining room on the first floor seats ten comfortably. The wine list has improved in recent years (a reasonable Indian wine section, a few imports) but most regulars order beer or the restaurant's lemon-sweet-lime mocktails.

Why it fits Impress Clients

Impress Clients belongs here because 6 Ballygunge Place is the culturally-literate Kolkata meal. A Bengali thali, ordered confidently at the city's reference restaurant, signals exactly the right kind of knowledge — that you did not default to the Oberoi Grand, that you understand the regional cuisine, and that you have taken the client somewhere they could not have found alone.
