About Hahnenkammstüberl
Hahnenkammstüberl is a 1955-vintage stone-walled mountain refuge at 1,712 metres at the top of the Hahnenkamm cable car — directly above the start of the Streif, the most-watched downhill course in skiing — and is the canonical Kitzbühel mountain lunch experience. The Niederwieser family has run the operation since 1962 and the hut is a Tyrolean farming-family business as much as a restaurant.
The menu is uncompromising mountain food. Tiroler Gröstel — fried potato and bacon with a fried egg on top — that has been the daily lunch special for sixty years; Käsespätzle with three Tyrolean mountain cheeses; a slow-cooked Tyrolean game stew with Knödel; Wiener Schnitzel hand-pounded from veal that arrives by cable car each morning; the famous 'Streif-Krapfen' apricot doughnut that the kitchen makes daily during Hahnenkamm-week. The cooking is portion-large and timed to the lunchtime ski-pause.
The room itself is the experience. Original 1955 stone walls, hand-carved larch panelling, three rooms across two floors, a south-facing terrace with three hundred seats and a direct view onto the Streif start house, and a wood-burning Kachelofen stove that runs from late November to mid-April. The wine list is short and almost entirely Austrian Alpine — Riesling, Grüner Veltliner, Blaufränkisch — all by the glass.
Service is mountain-warm and family-run — captains rotate from the Niederwieser extended family and seasonal staff. The Hahnenkammstüberl operates roughly mid-November to mid-April; outside that window the hut is closed. During Hahnenkamm-week (mid-January) the south-terrace lunch is functionally the social anchor of the whole resort and the booking math is harder than it looks.
Why It's Perfect for Team Dinner
Hahnenkammstüberl is the team-dinner-on-the-mountain room — the format works for a group of eight, the Käsespätzle and Gröstel are shared, and the south-terrace lunch overlooking the Streif is the canonical Kitzbühel social moment. It is also the right answer for a small-group birthday celebration: book the south-terrace ten-top at 11:30, ride the Hahnenkamm cable car up, and run lunch into early afternoon.
