Kubu Lodge Restaurant — Botswanan / International, Kasane

Kubu Lodge occupies a prime stretch of the Chobe River bank, its restaurant terrace extending to the water's edge where hippo pods surface regularly and the elephant herds from the national park occasionally arrive to drink. The access is easier than the major lodges, which makes Kubu the natural choice for independent travellers.

The Chobe River bream — freshly caught, grilled simply over coals with lemon and herbs — is the signature dish and the most direct expression of Kasane's location. The fish is exceptional: firm, white flesh with a clean freshwater sweetness that the simplest preparation best serves.

The braai selection includes kudu sausages and game burgers sourced from local suppliers — an accessible entry point into Botswana's game meat tradition for visitors encountering it for the first time.

Castle Lager, Botswana's dominant beer brand, arrives cold and in the large bottle format that the climate demands. The sundowner hour — from about 5:30pm as the light turns gold on the river — is the Kubu Lodge experience at its most satisfying.

Best Occasion: Great for Birthdays

River views, bream off the grill, cold Castle in rounds, and the hippo pods as evening entertainment. Birthday dinners at Kubu Lodge are remembered as genuinely magical.

Best Occasion: Perfect for Solo Dining

A riverside table alone, the Chobe bream, and the wildlife spectacle that Kasane provides constantly and without charge. Solo travel should produce evenings exactly like this.
