Elephant Valley Lodge — African / Bush Cuisine, Kasane

Elephant Valley Lodge is built on a dry riverbed traversed daily by elephant herds moving between the Chobe National Park and the Chobe River. The main deck overlooks the elephant highway, and the daily spectacle of herds passing metres from the table elevates every meal from good to extraordinary.

The kitchen operates in the classic African lodge tradition — breakfast as elephants walk past, lunch under the shade of a leadwood tree, and dinner with the sounds of the African bush and the occasional silhouette of an elephant against the floodlit waterhole.

The food is lodge-standard Southern African: game meat preparations, fresh Chobe bream, and the braaied (barbecued) meats that the southern African tradition elevates to an art form. The boma dinner — eaten around an open fire in a traditional enclosure — is the signature experience.

The star-gazing after dinner, with the Botswana sky unpolluted by city light, adds another dimension to an evening at Elephant Valley. The lodge provides star maps and a knowledgeable guide; the Milky Way provides the spectacle.

Best Occasion: Great for First Dates
