Anders auf dem Turmberg sits on top of the Turmberg in Durlach, the eastern hill that gives Karlsruhe its best view. The terrace looks west across the entire fan-shaped baroque city, north to the Rhine, and south to the Black Forest foothills. The restaurant has been the destination view dinner of the Karlsruhe region for over forty years and was relaunched under chef Sven Anders in 2018 with a contemporary Baden menu that has since attracted serious press.
The kitchen runs confident modern Baden cooking. Beef tartare with truffle and aged Parmigiano; Schwarzwald trout sashimi with verjuice and fennel; pike-perch from the Rhine with brown butter and capers; Schwarzwald deer with cherry and red cabbage; aged Limousin beef with confit shallot. The five-course tasting at €68 is the right move; the à la carte rotates seasonally.
The wine list runs about 350 references with a strong Baden and Pfalz bench, a serious Austrian Wachau and Burgenland section, and a deep Champagne row. The by-the-glass programme rotates fifteen bottles. Mark-ups are notably fair given the view and the kitchen quality.
Service is led by long-tenured staff and runs at the careful European register the elevation requires. The terrace fills with locals on weeknights and visiting groups on weekends; the view tables book three weeks ahead in summer. The funicular up the Turmberg is part of the booking experience and the descent on foot through the Durlach old town is the right after-dinner walk.
